Dear Parents and Guardians,

Expectations for Success: Power Hour Revisited

At PHVS, we have been striving for increased student success.  In fact, 4th quarter last year, our failure rate was down to 8%. However, with the “student choice” version of Power Hour this year, 25% of our students had one or more F’s at the end of the quarter 1.

Too often, it is easier for students to not do the work and take the zero on an assignment or a test.  This is currently happening with our students as 44% of them have 1 or more F’s as of today. Students who are struggling with work completion, a bad grade on a test, or just need extra support will get the help they need during our new version of Power Hour.   In addition, we will still provide after school tutoring Tuesday - Thursday.

Nov 28th and most Wednesdays after, students will report to advisory at 9:29.  Students with an F in any class will be assigned and required to work with a teacher until 10:14.  Students with a D may request to see a teacher, but it is not required at this time.

Students that do not need extra help will stay with their advisor and work quietly or go to an extension activity.  Teachers offering extension activities will post the activity of the week. Students that wish to take part in the extension activity must request a pass before Power Hour.

I look forward to working together to reduce our F rate and help students experience the satisfaction of success.
