Power Hour: Year 2-Expectations for Success

Dear Parents and Guardians:

I could not be prouder of the staff and students at PVHS!  Our F rate -went down to 8% at the end of the 17-18 school year, this means more students will be graduating on time with less remediation classes.  Our climate survey results came back yesterday and we went from below favorable to favorable in every category.  Our ACT data results were very consistent with the past few years at 17.4 average.

At PHVS, we are continuing to make some changes in expectations for student success.  We will be utilizing a tool called Mastery Connect, which allows you to see how your student is doing on each state standard.  Proficient is 80% and above, practiced is 60-79%, and emergent is anything less than 60%.  We will be sharing access to this program with you, although it will not replace grades. With this change, extra credit opportunities will also be limited to standards related work.

We will be continuing Power Hour with some adjustments.  Starting no later than September 5th and most Wednesdays after, students will receive a grade print out from their 4th period teacher.  Students will then go to tutoring, clubs, and extension activities for a minimum of 30 minutes and take no more than 30 minutes for lunch.   A schedule of tutors, clubs, and extension activities will be posted so students can choose whether to eat the first or second half of lunch.

Students are expected to pass every class with a C and students are required to seek tutoring during Power Hour if they have less than 65% in any class.  If a student continues to earn an F in a class, a student, teacher, and administrator conference may be required.

We have updated PVHS grading policies to hold students accountable for their learning.  Our late work policy allows students to turn in an assignment up to 3 days after a unit exam (defined as a test that encompasses 3-6 weeks of material) for no more than a 20% deduction.  However, teachers may require the work to be done during Power Hour or an alternative assignment may be given.  Our test retake policy allows students to retake tests without penalty, the scores are not averaged together.  Again, teachers may require students attend a study session during Power Hour or a study activity prior to the retake.  Teachers may also make changes to the test including format, for example:  first test is multiple choice and second test is short answer as long as the standards remain the same.

I look forward to the great year of learning ahead!
